Introduction to AIEN Institute, Shanghai OceanUniversity (Updated October 2021)

AIEN Institute, jointly established by Shanghai Ocean University (SHOU) andthe University of Tasmania in 2002, is based on the principle of complementarycooperation and mutual development between the two universities. The Institutenow offers two programs: Bachelor ofInformation Systems majoring in information management and information systems,and Bachelor of Business majoring in marketing, which were authorized by the Shanghai MunicipalEducation Commission in 2002 and 2003, respectively. The admission of AIENstudents is included in the undergraduate enrolment plan of Chinese generalcolleges and universities. Currently, AIEN has more than 1400 students. Fromthe nineteen cohorts enrolled since 2002, there have been more than 5700graduates up to July 2021. 

In January 2008, the two programswere among the first group of Sino-foreign programs in Shanghai to be reviewedby the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. AIEN Institutewas audited twice by the Australian Universities Quality Agency (AUQA/TEQSA) in2005 and 2011 respectively, and received favorable reviews. In March 2017,AIEN Institute obtained accreditation certificates for the two programs issuedby Shanghai Education Evaluation Association (SEEA).

The employment rate for AIEN graduates is higher than 95%. Among the 30% ofAIEN graduates seeking advanced further study abroad, over 30% of them havebeen admitted by the world’s top 100 universities.

 

Bachelor of Information Systems (BIS)
The BIS course covers advanced information technology,information systems, information management, business management, businesslogistics, and environment science. After becoming equipped with academicEnglish proficiency and expertise in analysis, design and development ininformation systems, the graduates are prepared to become highly-qualifiedprofessionals in their relevant fields. Upon completing the program, graduatescan apply for further study of a master’s degree, both at home or abroad. Theyare also readily able to find a professional job or other major-relatedoccupation in various sectors.

Bachelor of Business (BBus)
The BBus course covers advanced marketing theory,marketing expertise, commerce, business management, finance and economics. Throughoutthe course, the students are equipped with an academic and professional Englishproficiency in marketing. Further, the graduates are prepared to becomehighly-qualified professionals in their relevant fields. Upon completing theprogram, graduates can apply for further study of a master’s degree, both athome or abroad, and they also have the skills and knowledge to obtain relevantprofessional employment in their area of expertise.

The Campus of SHOU
In August 2008, SHOU moved to a new campus in LingangNew City, a harbor city which is located in the southeast of greater Shanghai,acting as a satellite city center connecting Shanghai Pudong Airport and YangshanDeep Sea Port. The new city is located near the shore of the ocean, as well asa large lake called Dishui Lake, the largest man-made lake in China and a majortourism and recreation hub.

At the moment, there are five universities located in close proximity withinthe Lingang area, with a combined student population of about 60,000. The airis clean and the open spaces are welcoming, which attracts a large number ofvisitors into the area, particularly those who enjoy outdoor pursuits such ascycling, sailing and running. There are a great range of dining, entertainmentand shopping options available in Lingang New City, which provide many choicesfor students who live on the campus.

Campus facilities
The SHOU campus is very modern and convenient, with awide range of facilities and amenities. The university is also equipped withthe latest digital technology, all set against the backdrop of a beautiful andrelaxing campus, including parks, lakes and recreation areas.

There are a number of restaurants – both Chinese and western - as well ascafeterias, a supermarket, convenience shops, post office and bankingfacilities on the campus.

Transportationto central Shanghai

Thetransport infrastructure in Lingang is developing quickly, and there are nowvarious options providing access to the downtown area of Shanghai:

1.      The SHOUuniversity commuter buses run daily from downtown Shanghai with five routes.One route is from Zhangjiang High Technology Park Metro station to the campus,leaving at 7.00 am each morning. The return bus departs from the campus eachday at 1.00 pm and 4.30 pm (Friday at 3.30 pm). The commuting time is about 60minutes and the bus fare is RMB 10. Zhangjiang High Technology Park Metrostation is only 8 stops from People’s Square in the very centre of Shanghai.

2.      TheShanghai Metro Line 16 runs from Longyang Road Metro Station to two stops inLingang, Lingang Avenue and Dishui Lake, the latter being the most convenientfor arriving at the campus. There is a bus terminal next to the Metro station,which will bring travelers from Dishui Lake station to stops next to thecampus.

3.      A taxito Pudong International Airport will take around 40 minutes. Another way to reachPudong International Airport is to take the Metro Line 16 to Longyang Road MetroStation, which is also the starting stop for Magnetic Elevated Train (with afastest speed of 431km/h, taking only 7 minutes to reach to the airport.)
